Bonsai

olive bonsai

Bonsai trees never caught on in Greece until local varieties of trees started being used. Here is a well-known local variety of olive tree decorating the flower boxes (Christmas-style) outside a patisserie - but not in Hania. This photo was taken in Rethimno, a town that looks like a miniature version of Hania, located westwards, less than an hour's drive away from Hania.

  2. If I understood this rightly: A miniature olive tree as a Christmas tree? Good Idea - sometimes a tradition needs some renewal.

  3. Personally, I'm not crazy about bonsai. But, if you're into it, using local plant varieties makes sense!

  4. I've never thought about olive trees for a bonsai. Do they have tiny little olives that you press for little lunch salads? '~)
My choice for a bonsai would be our local sand pines, they're gnarly and would be fabulous but I'm not that attentive to house plants. I don't think it could survive me.

I wouldn't say that Rethymno is a smaller Hania...

  9. My daughter wants one of those for her bedroom window. She is doing well with her magic bamboo plant, so maybe for her birthday she'll get her bonsai tree. Are they hard to care for?
