The old minaret adjacent to St Nikolaos church is a perfect reminder of the way the East met the West in the town I made my home, Chania, Crete, Greece.
The photographs I post all help to tell a part of a longer story that focuses on the town and its citizens, whether they are living there now, or have made their home in other parts of the world. As a newer resident, by writing about the town in this way, I am trying to put some order into the chaos that I seem to be confronted with.

Trying to strike gold on the mountainside has been re-shaping the Cretan landscape for the last few decades.
what you are seeing in my photo today is a mountainside that had never been cultivated by olive trees before, and now, with the facilities available, it's easier to do this, so the whole mountain has been carved up and planted with trees, by people hoping to strike gold by high olive oil prices (it dropped from 6 euro to 1.5 a litre of freshly produced oil this year.
It does look strange. Can you explain to me what we are seeing here?
ReplyDeleteI'm not used to seeing those trees in neat rows and without underbrush. It looks so unnatural.
ReplyDeleteSuch a big drop in prices for the oil?
Good luck with your heatwave. It is due to reach us in a day or two. Here even the water at our Mediterranean beaches is at 30 degrees.
???

ReplyDeleteOh! So these are young olive trees we're seeing?
ReplyDeleteInteresting - especially since I start the day with a spoonful of olive oil from Crete.
ReplyDeletePS Thank you for the comment - they hit the worst period this summer. That is why people come to Crete...
I learned something here today...thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteGold indeed!
