The old minaret adjacent to St Nikolaos church is a perfect reminder of the way the East met the West in the town I made my home, Chania, Crete, Greece.
The photographs I post all help to tell a part of a longer story that focuses on the town and its citizens, whether they are living there now, or have made their home in other parts of the world. As a newer resident, by writing about the town in this way, I am trying to put some order into the chaos that I seem to be confronted with.

Village church
A picturesquely set church, in the village of Vathi, on the way to Elafonisi.
Wo Maria/M. Kiwi, that is interesting what you wrote me about the memorial cakes! I went now to read about Persephone--fascinating mythology it is. So she is now the harbinger of spring? I see why pomegranates would not be so popular for eating. Opening them is a lot of work, time-consuming. And chewing a spoonful and then spitting out the seeds, well. . .
Is church attendance what it once was?
ReplyDeleteThat is a picturesque setting for a village church! Lovely pic!
ReplyDeleteA perfect place for a church. Very lovely.
ReplyDeleteAre the doors always open on such churches, for people to go in to visit or to pray in silence?
ReplyDeleteEvery village has a church to adorn it. I love Elafonisi. I have collected some sand of every colour, put it into a glass jar and i see it every day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Seems like forget in the middle of the vegetation!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the good answers.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love all the cut-out figures (also called icons?) in the cave church of John the Baptist.
