The old minaret adjacent to St Nikolaos church is a perfect reminder of the way the East met the West in the town I made my home, Chania, Crete, Greece. The photographs I post all help to tell a part of a longer story that focuses on the town and its citizens, whether they are living there now, or have made their home in other parts of the world. As a newer resident, by writing about the town in this way, I am trying to put some order into the chaos that I seem to be confronted with.

SkyWatch Friday: sunset
No, it's not a tropical paradise, it's the sunset over Kalamaki Beach. I once complained that turbulent skies are rare in Crete, making my SkyWatch participation seem like a poor addition to the event. That's when Hyde pointed out that I should concentrate on sunsets in my town, like he did when he visited Hania, and I think he was right. We've seen the sun set nearly every day for over a month from this spot. Today marks the last day of swimming lessons, giving us a chance to move on and find another sunset watching spot.
Check out more sky watchers at the SKY WATCH site.

Beautiful colors! My skies will be like yours in a month or two. I love it, but it will be tough for SkyWatch (except I have piles reserved.) But when our skies are crystal clear, we don't have the foliage to frame them like in this shot.
ReplyDeleteGood advice -- the sunset is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is very dramatic! I love the way you framed the sky.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful sunset, just as Tom said. Very great colors!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the links Maria, looking forward to a few more sunsets from you.
ReplyDeleteFirst, my apologies for a bit of cut and paste commenting. I have been doing the rounds via Bloglines and looking at all the pictures from my favourite photo blogs, but haven’t been leaving comments. Generally, I try to comment as much as I can (I know how good it is for ‘morale’ to know that someone is out there appreciating them), but after the birth of my second son, I am a bit knackered to think up something witty and insightful on the hop. Thus the resort to Control+C and Control+P!

What a beautiful shot. I love the dark of the buildings against the dramatic color of the sky.
