One day in Hania...

The old minaret adjacent to St Nikolaos church is a perfect reminder of the way the East met the West in the town I made my home, Chania, Crete, Greece. The photographs I post all help to tell a part of a longer story that focuses on the town and its citizens, whether they are living there now, or have made their home in other parts of the world. As a newer resident, by writing about the town in this way, I am trying to put some order into the chaos that I seem to be confronted with.

Kalamaki beach pirates

The best time to enjoy the beach is when the sun is about to set. Your body cools down just enough to enervate you and give you the confidence you need to conquer anything that comes your way. When these children grow up, I wonder if they'll remember that they were pirates conquering the seas, building castles and looking for treasure.

Lucky kids with a sea and boats to play pirate on. Sure they will remember.
Here is a story to show you how pirate-played remained half a century in my unconscious mind. When I lived in Sydney I got a free eye test at UNSW by agreeing to let 6 students and their professor practice doing all the tests. One entailed wearing a patch on one eye. I quipped: "Oh great! I always wanted to be a pirate!" The very polite young Asian students needed about a minute before they realized they could laugh at that. LOL
