Bread

In Greece, sliced bread is found in the convenience food counters of a supermarket. It is hardly ever sold in bakeries, and it never competes with the uncut loaf of bread. Most people buy their bread at the local bakery. I buy it from the supermarket because I like the bread produced by their suppliers. It is made in the same way as fresh bakery bread.

Another staple bread product in Crete is the wholemeal rusk, commonly known here as paximadi, made by double-baking bread slices.

As you can see, it's a popular product, judging by the well-stocked shelves.

Rusk is popular in Cretan summer salad.

Yesterday's quiz answers: Kalamata olives, corn, avocado, daikon (white) radish, (purple) kohlrabi, rocket salad, quince (yellow), pomegranate (streaky red-yellow)

  1. It all looks good.
I remember the days Israel had two choices: darkish bread or on Fridays, Shabbat challah. Neither sliced. Today there is a vast variety. But the unsliced loaves are still not wrapped.

    I love your food tours.
