The old minaret adjacent to St Nikolaos church is a perfect reminder of the way the East met the West in the town I made my home, Chania, Crete, Greece. The photographs I post all help to tell a part of a longer story that focuses on the town and its citizens, whether they are living there now, or have made their home in other parts of the world. As a newer resident, by writing about the town in this way, I am trying to put some order into the chaos that I seem to be confronted with.

ABC Wednesday: Street sweeper
It's ABC Wednesday again, and S is for street sweeper.
I admire the patience of this immigrant to my town, taking on the job of sweeping the main street right in front of the Agora clean for the benefit of the locals and tourists alike. He didn't bat an eyelid when he saw me photographing him; he just proudly carried on with his work. Notice how he's tied a few blue bin liners behind him; he's just doing his job.

Good to see workmen doing a honest day's work and we need them and they deserve our respect. I hope they always get it from us.
ReplyDeleteGood one. Nice man. Yesterday I waited a long time for my bus in the center of Jerusalem and got to watching the street sweeper work. Like you, I wanted to take his picture. But unlike you, I'm too shy to shoot people who see me shooting. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteBut then I did come home with two good stealth shots of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men.
